Description

High-Resistance Corrosion Protection

Owatrol C.I.P. (Corrosion Inhibiting Primer) is a penetrating anti-corrosion primer designed to stabilise metal surfaces and provide a strong base for subsequent coatings.

It penetrates the substrate, helps isolate the sound metal underneath and forms a solid, flexible protective film. It can be applied to new or suitably prepared rusted surfaces.

Designed for Demanding Marine Conditions

C.I.P. is particularly relevant for marine maintenance. Owatrol specifically recommends it for severe environmental conditions, including marine and tropical climates, corrosive atmospheres and boat ballast areas. Owatrol also identifies applications including cast-iron or steel keels, bilges, ballast areas and double bottoms.

Key Features

  • 0.75L container
  • High-resistance anti-corrosion primer
  • Single-component formulation
  • Suitable for new or rusted surfaces
  • Penetrates and stabilises firmly adhering rust
  • Strong adhesion to metal substrates
  • Forms a solid, flexible protective film
  • Suitable for interior and exterior use
  • Particularly suitable for marine and demanding environments
  • Can be used beneath compatible one- and two-component finishes
  • Suitable beneath compatible epoxy and polyurethane coatings
  • Suitable beneath compatible chlorinated-rubber coatings
  • Temperature resistance up to 175°C
  • Approximate coverage: 15m²/L per coat
  • Application by brush, roller or spray
  • Satin, reddish-brown finish

Surface Preparation

Remove loose or flaking rust, mill scale and poorly adhering old paint using a scraper, wire brush or other suitable preparation method.

Firmly adhering rust does not necessarily need to be removed completely. The surface should be clean, dry and free from oil, grease and other contamination before C.I.P. is applied.

Application

Stir C.I.P. thoroughly before and during application to keep the pigments evenly distributed.

Apply a thin coat rather than building excessive thickness. On heavily oxidised surfaces or areas exposed to particularly severe conditions, Owatrol recommends two thin coats, allowing the specified drying period between applications.

The primer must be completely dry before overcoating. Drying and overcoating times vary according to the finishing system, particularly with fast-drying and two-component products, so follow the current Owatrol technical data sheet and the instructions for the chosen topcoat.

Useful for Boat Maintenance

For boats, C.I.P. can form part of a corrosion-control system on suitable metal components such as:

  • Steel and cast-iron keels
  • Bilge areas
  • Ballast areas
  • Metal structures
  • Steel components
  • Other suitably prepared ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces

Where a component will be immersed or exposed to particularly demanding conditions, C.I.P. should be used as part of an appropriate complete coating system, rather than treated as the final protective finish on its own.

Pro Tip

For a rusted steel or cast-iron keel, don't automatically remove every trace of firmly adhering rust. Remove loose rust, scale, failing paint and contamination, then follow Owatrol's preparation instructions before applying C.I.P.

If C.I.P. will be followed by epoxy, polyurethane, antifouling or another specialist marine coating, pay close attention to the specified overcoating time. C.I.P. must be fully dry before the next coating is applied, and the required interval depends on the finishing system.
