Description
Penetrating Rust Inhibitor
Owatrol Oil is a highly penetrating, air-drying oil designed to protect and stabilise rusted metal.
Applied directly to suitable rusted surfaces, it penetrates through the rust towards the sound metal beneath, displacing moisture and air and forming a flexible protective film. This provides a stable surface for subsequent compatible coatings.
It can be used on ferrous and non-ferrous metals and provides particularly useful protection where corrosion has already started.
Paint Conditioner & Additive
Owatrol Oil can also be mixed with compatible oil and alkyd-based paints, stains and varnishes.
When used as an additive, it can:
- Improve paint flow and workability
- Increase wet-edge time
- Improve adhesion
- Help reduce application difficulties in challenging conditions
- Replace conventional thinner in suitable applications without reducing the paint’s inherent quality
- Give compatible oil/alkyd paints rust-inhibiting properties

Useful for Marine Maintenance
Owatrol Oil is particularly useful around boats for treating suitable rusted metal components, fittings and structures before applying a compatible finishing system.
Its ability to penetrate corrosion and displace moisture is valuable in environments exposed to humidity and salt air.
It can also be used as a conditioner with compatible oil/alkyd coatings, but always check the finishing product’s compatibility before mixing.
Important Compatibility Information
Owatrol Oil is not a universal paint additive.
Do not mix it with:
- Water-based paints
- Two-component paints
- Chlorinated-rubber paints
- Rapid-drying paints such as certain automotive finishes
When adding Owatrol Oil to another coating, carry out a compatibility test and follow Owatrol’s mixing instructions.
Surface Preparation
Before application, make sure the surface is clean, dry and free from oil, grease, loose scale and other contaminants.
When treating rust, remove loose and flaking rust or paint, but Owatrol specifically advises that firmly adhering rust does not need to be removed back to bright metal.
