Owatrol RA.85 is a flexible aluminium-coloured finishing paint designed to provide both a decorative finish and protection against corrosion.

Surface Preparation & Application

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from oil, grease and other contaminants before application.

Stir RA.85 thoroughly before and during use to keep the aluminium pigment properly suspended.

Owatrol instructs users not to dilute the product. Apply one coat, or additional coats where required, allowing the specified drying/recoating period between applications.

For new metal other than aluminium, Owatrol recommends an application of Owatrol Oil before RA.85 to help prevent interaction between the underlying metal and the aluminium paint.

Useful for Marine Maintenance

RA.85 is included by Owatrol within its marine solutions and can be useful for protecting suitable metal components exposed to demanding conditions. Its corrosion resistance, adhesion and flexible finish are particularly relevant where metal is exposed to weather and moisture.

For specific marine applications, always check that RA.85 is appropriate for the particular substrate, location and exposure conditions before application.

Owatrol Deks Olje D.2 is a clear marine varnish designed to provide a deep, high-gloss finish while allowing the natural appearance and grain of the wood to remain visible.

Its flexible protective film is formulated to resist blistering, cracking, peeling and flaking, making it well suited to exterior wood exposed to demanding marine conditions.

Use with Deks Olje D.1

For the complete Owatrol Deks Olje system, the wood should first be treated with Owatrol Deks Olje D.1.

Allow D.1 to dry for approximately 24–72 hours before applying D.2. The surface should be completely dry and non-tacky before the first coat of D.2 is applied.

Application

The surface must be properly prepared, clean and completely dry before application.

Apply 4–6 coats of Deks Olje D.2, allowing at least approximately 12 hours between coats under suitable conditions. Lower temperatures or higher relative humidity can increase the required drying time.

Routine sanding between coats is not necessary.

If wood fibres become raised, a fine abrasive above P240 may be used as appropriate. For an enhanced high-gloss finish, Owatrol also provides a specific fine-sanding procedure using abrasive above P400 before the final finishing stage.

Always follow the current Owatrol technical instructions when applying the complete system.

Allow Sufficient Time Before Use

Once application is complete, Owatrol’s current technical guidance recommends allowing approximately one week before putting the treated surface into service.

Drying times can vary according to temperature, humidity, ventilation and application conditions.

Important for Decks & Walking Surfaces

Deks Olje D.2 produces a high-gloss film that can become slippery, particularly when wet.

For frequently walked-on deck areas, Owatrol recommends using Deks Olje D.1 without D.2, unless an appropriate anti-slip solution is incorporated.

Owatrol Deks Olje D.1 is a penetrating wood saturator based on alkyd resins and natural oils, developed for dense, oily and difficult-to-impregnate woods.

Unlike a conventional varnish, D.1 does not create a film on the surface. Instead, it penetrates and saturates the wood, leaving a natural matt/oiled appearance while enhancing the character of the timber.

It is particularly well suited to teak and other exotic hardwoods used in marine environments.

Wet-on-Wet Application

Deks Olje D.1 should be applied using a wet-on-wet saturation method, rather than like a conventional varnish.

Apply the first coat generously and allow approximately 15–30 minutes for the product to penetrate.

Continue applying further coats wet-on-wet, without allowing the previous application to dry, until the wood is fully saturated and will accept no more product.

After saturation, brush out or wipe away excess product remaining on the surface. D.1 should penetrate the wood rather than dry as a thick surface film. Removing excess product also helps prevent shiny or sticky areas.

Surface Preparation

For effective penetration, the wood should be clean, dry and free from coatings or contamination that could prevent D.1 from entering the timber.

Old varnish, paint and other film-forming finishes must be properly removed before application.

Preparation will depend on whether the wood is new, weathered, previously oiled or previously coated, so follow Owatrol’s appropriate preparation instructions for the condition of the timber.

Owatrol’s technical guidance specifies a maximum wood moisture content of approximately 18% and recommends applying under suitable dry-weather conditions.

Using D.1 with Deks Olje D.2

Deks Olje D.1 can be used alone for a natural matt/oiled appearance or as the first stage of the complete Owatrol Deks Olje D.1 + D.2 system.

For a clear high-gloss finish, saturate the wood with D.1 and allow it to dry for approximately 24–72 hours.

The surface must be completely dry and non-tacky before applying Deks Olje D.2.

D.2 can then be applied to suitable woodwork to create the characteristic high-gloss Deks Olje finish.

Below the Waterline

Deks Olje D.1 can be used as part of the preparation/treatment of suitable wood below the waterline, but it should not be used as the final standalone finish for continuous immersion.

Where used below the waterline, it must subsequently be covered with an appropriate compatible underwater coating system in accordance with Owatrol and coating-manufacturer instructions.

Simple Maintenance

When D.1-treated wood begins to lighten and lose its freshly treated appearance, maintenance can normally be carried out by cleaning the surface appropriately and applying additional D.1.

When the existing treatment has been correctly maintained and remains suitable for recoating, complete stripping or sanding is not normally required.

Le Tonkinois Marine No.1 is a high-gloss oil varnish developed specifically for maritime applications.

Designed for all types of wood, it can be used on interior and exterior woodwork where a durable, traditional high-gloss finish is required. The manufacturer specifies very good resistance to UV exposure and seawater, making it particularly suitable for demanding marine environments.

Application

Stir the varnish thoroughly before use and apply in thin, even coats.

For exterior woodwork, the manufacturer’s current technical sheet recommends 6–10 thin coats, depending on the weather exposure and level of stress on the wood. For interior applications, the number of coats can be approximately halved. Only one coat per day should be applied to reduce the risk of coating problems.

Allow each coat to dry properly before continuing. At approximately 20°C with medium humidity, drying takes around 5–8 hours, with at least 24 hours recommended before recoating where possible.

Lower temperatures, high humidity and poor air circulation can significantly increase drying time.

Sanding Between Coats

For intermediate sanding, the manufacturer states that up to approximately 180 grit is sufficient.

Careful preparation and thin applications are important for achieving an even, high-gloss finish.

Brush, Roller or Spray Application

Marine No.1 can be applied by:

For normal brush or roller application, the product is supplied ready for use.

There is a small nuance in the manufacturer’s current technical sheet: it initially states “do not dilute,” but later permits up to 10% Le Tonkinois Thinner when spray applying. For customer-facing information, I would therefore describe it as ready to use for brush/roller application, with manufacturer-approved thinner only when required for spraying.

Supplied in a 750 ml tin, International Schooner is ideal for varnishing brightwork such as handrails, coamings, spars, and trim where a classic, high-gloss finish is desired.

Formulated to penetrate deeply into the timber, Woodskin helps protect against moisture ingress, UV damage, and weathering while maintaining a natural wood appearance. Unlike traditional varnishes, it does not crack or peel, making maintenance simple — additional coats can be applied without sanding back to bare wood.
